I have a question for the anti-raw AVMA veterinarians. — 9 Comments

  1. Maybe I could ask – my animal nutrition course starts on Tuesday – taught by a vet who doesn’t even think dogs are carnivores or related to wolves 😉 Granted it is a class for the Veterinary Technician program I am in, but it *is* taught by a vet, who claims she knows everything there is about nutrition. Yes, this could be interesting: Discussing in class how ‘amazing’ kibble is and then going home and feeding all my carnivores a raw diet. Sorry for the rant, it just frustrates me how much misinformation we are taught, going against the oath that I will take when I graduate:

“I solemnly dedicate myself to aiding animals and society by providing excellent care and services for animals, by alleviating animal suffering, and by promoting public health.

I accept my obligations to practice my profession conscientiously and with sensitivity, adhering to the profession’s Code of Ethics, and furthering my knowledge and competence through a commitment to lifelong learning.”

      • I don’t know if I even want to hear their answers, this quote from Purina was enough to make my blood pressure rise. It is from the nutrition class that is taught mostly by Hills and Purina:

“Dogs and cats require nutrients, not ingredients.” – Purina

  2. All EXCELLENT points and questions, Tracy! Given how many vets pay attention to the AVMA policy on declawing (that education to alternatives should be explored first and basically declawing should be used as a last resort), I don’t know how much the policy will actually impact pro-raw vets (but, sadly, they are the exception).

I find this AVMA policy against raw feeding sickening, frustrating, and yes, angering: an organization built of members that are responsible for the care of our pets has responded to the desire of those of us that want to feed our pets a species-appropriate diet with this completely unnecessary slap-in-the-face. What I find most disgusting about it all is the guise of science from a professional organization that, as they state themselves, “is a science-based organization.” Yet this ludicrous policy relies upon a reference list of studies that do not stand up to a puff of air, let alone rigorous scrutiny. They say the decision had nothing to do with the Pet Food Industry. Puh-leese. Spare me. And bite me.

    • Jennifer, how awesome to have you here. I was delighted to see another naturally-fed carnivore website go up; the more who speak out, the more pets will be rescued from suffering at the hands of low-grade and inappropriate commercial pet foods.

♥Thank you so much for coming by!♥

  3. Goodness I just love this post. I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner.

Seven raw fed cats here.. all doing extremely well. I’ve “cured” several cases of extreme diarrhea in shelter cats getting them on raw food. It kills me when people just won’t even give it a chance..
