Bits ‘n Bites: Lux, Clicker Training, and Grief — 2 Comments

  1. Hi,

We adopted a 13-15 mos old male shelter kitty about 5 weeks ago. He was neutered approximately 60-75 days ago. He is a very smart and outgoing kitty and is really trying to fit into the household. He does not have a shy bone in his body and will run up to strangers the moment they walk into the house. He is very, very active. He loves to climb and to be up high. Overall, he is a good boy, but he has some behaviors we would like to try to change/improve.

    1) He bites. Constantly. He rarely breaks the skin, but it does happen. Our Vet thinks maybe he was a bottle baby and that he may not actually ever stop this behavior. His biting has slowed down a bit, but it is still pretty constant. We have tried giving him soft small toys in place of our hands but he ignores them. On occasion, when we pull our hands away from him he will then focus on our feet and ankles. Again, he rarely breaks the skin….but he he pretty aggressive and does not like to stop once he gets started. We try not to yell at him. When he bites, we try to get away physically from him but still try to speak softly and tell him “no” or “ouch” and then ignore him. It is hard to tell if this is working or not. Plus, there are 3 of us in the house and regularly have some kids in the house too…so it is difficult to get everyone to react the same way each time. Other than giving him a soft toy, and what we are currently doing, do you have any other suggestions?

We have tried clicker training. And he now comes when he is called. However, this cat is not motivated by food so he has a very short attention span when it comes to the training!

Finally, he loves to jump up on the table and kitchen counters. We have tried saying no, and then using the water bottle. it does not phase him…he likes water! We are currently all saying “no” and then putting him on the ground. He bites us when we pick him up and then jumps right back up onto the counter or table.

Sorry for hitting you up with multiple questions. Hopefully you will have some suggestions to help us ease his transition into his new home. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.
    Sincerely,
    Veronica

  2. Sorry to hear of the biting and jumping up on the table problems with your kitty. Sounds like he is very use to having his way. He likes his decisions. You are doing everything right to correct him. Some people have used pennies in a coke can. When kitty does a no-no thing shake the can(s). Cats don’t like the noise and often associate it with your words of “No, Down! Or if biting, “No Bites!”
It may take awhile but hopefully he will get tired of the whole
process. Hope this helps! Shake, shake, shake, him off!
